We will be hosting Smart Food Growing Technologies on Saturday. This will be an interactive session. To gain the most from this session, we have been given some homework to prepare.
SFGT is giving us a few questions to consider before Saturday. These questions, and some answers that you need to prepare are detailed below:
1. Chianampas: what are they, and how does the irrigation mechanism in this farming system work?
2. Self watering/ wicking/ capillary action, and the efficiency of such systems. Do you know what these words mean?
3. Points of failure in agricultural production systems, or points of potential failure.
Some of the answers may include the following:
1. The Chianampas were the pre-colonial means of agricultural production on Mexico and Mexico City in particular. It has been described as the world’s most productive agricultural system and involves constructing floating reed beds where vegetables and crops are planted. These are done in a wetland context and sustained the pre-colonial civilizations in Mexico.
2. Any cloth or material pulls water into itself. Very small tubes do this quite significantly, and this tendency of materials to “suck up” water is an effective way of watering plants.
3. You need to know where the bottlenecks in your enterprise and enterprise operations are! Identify the critical points of failure and you can ensure your systems will operate when a shock happens!
Please do prepare for this exciting presentation!
Thank you Smart Food Growing Technologies for the upcoming lecture on Saturday!
